Specializing in benign and malignant breast disease as well as Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery. Our team of surgeons provide a wide range of expertise in breast management
Our Surgeons operate at the Misericordia Community Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute. Both of these hospitals complete the highest rates of breast cancer operations in
Northern Alberta each year.
With a breast cancer diagnosis, early detection means better outcomes. Screening tests can help find breast cancer before any symptoms develop. When breast cancer is found and treated early, the chances of successful treatment are better.
Our team of surgeons provide a wide range of expertise in the management of breast cancer.
After a breast cancer diagnosis, one of the most important decisions you'll make is choosing your treatment team
One Step At A Time
"Every journey, no matter how far, starts with one step"
What to Expect at your first Appointment
Your experience begins with a phone call or visit to our office. Our team of surgeons and assistants will guide you through this journey step by step. Our top priority are our patients and their families. Our office works closely with the Comprehensive Breast Care Program (CBCP). You will typically be contacted by a Nurse Navigator from the CBCP prior to your first visit with your surgeon. The program provides ongoing education and support throughout your journey. You can find their online education package at the following:
Your Surgeon will discuss various surgical options with you. Most often surgery will be the next recommended step. Typical timelines for surgery are within 4 weeks for invasive cancer and 8 weeks for non-invasive cancer (DCIS). Occasionally it will be recommended to start either chemotherapy or endocrine (hormone) therapy prior to surgery (neoadjuvant). If this is suggested, additional X-ray tests may be required. Our office will arrange all necessary investigations. These may include a further ultrasound scan, a CT scan, bone scan or an MRI scan.
You will come back to see your surgeon close to the time of completion of your neoadjuvant treatment. You will undergo mandatory repeat imaging tests of breast and axilla prior to seeing the surgeon to determine how the cancer has responded to this treatment.
Most Breast Surgeries are day procedures. Only some forms of breast reconstruction cases will be kept in hospital. Analgesic prescription will be provided by your surgeon on the day of surgery. Quite often, only the first 24-48 hours requires use of this medication.
Questions about post-operative issues such as wound care or swelling should be directed to your CBCP nurse navigator first and then to your surgeon's medical assistant if required. A follow up visit is always made for you as this will be the time to review your final pathology report with your surgeon. This typically occurs 2 weeks following your surgery.
If you require any additional surgical procedure at the request of your surgeon, this will be arranged urgently by the office.
Our office will arrange for your appointment with the regional cancer center at the completion of your surgery.
